Abstract

Methylparaben and propylparaben were effective antibacterial and antifungal agents. There were many kinds of cosmetic products in our community which used methylparaben and propylparaben as preservatives, which one was hand and body lotion. The decision of the foreman of supervisor drug and food comitee (Badan Pengawas Obat dan Makanan) The Republic of  Indonesia No.HK.00.05.4.1745, May 5th 2003 about cosmetic mentioned that maximum limit of  methylparaben and propylparaben concentration was 0,4 % as single preservative and 0,8 % as mixed preservative. Based on writer inspection, producer hand and body lotion did not state the concentration of methylparaben and propylparaben in their products. This research was done to find out the methylparaben and propylparaben concentration and to know wheter the concentration obey the regulation which was decided.

This research was a non eksperimental descriptive research, used reversed phase High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) method with Water Novopac C18 column, methanol : aquabidest (4:6) as mobile phase, flow rate 1,2 ml/minute, and detector UV 257 nm. The parameters used to express the validation of this method were selectivity, accuracy, precision, linearity, Limit of Detection (LOD), and Limit of Quantitation (LOQ) Based on the result of validation, it can be concluded that HPLC method was valid enough to analysis methylparaben and propylparaben in hand and body lotion.

From the analysis result on significant level of  95 %, it was found that the three of   hand and body lotions which were studied contain methylparaben and propylparaben with concentration average

were as follow: sample “A” (0,24 ± 0,003) %; sample “B” (0,19 ± 0,004) %; sample “C” (0,11 ± 0,002) % for methylparaben, and sample “A” (0,09 ± 0,000) %; sample “B” (0,09 ± 0,001) %; and sample “C” (0,08 ± 0,001) % for propylparaben. It can be concluded that methylparaben and propylparaben concentration, as single or mixed preservative in the sample studied obeyed the regulation which was decided.
